Forsberg’s NHL Return with Rangers or Flyers
January 30th, 2008 | Posted by Wicked in NHL trade rumorsNew sources are reporting that the three most likely teams that Peter Forsberg would play for when Forsberg returns to the NHL are the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers or Detroit Red Wings. I personally would count the Red Wings out because they were a former rival and I think that Forsberg probably hates the Red Wings after playing with the Avalanche and being on the team during the Claude Lemieux/Kris Draper incident.
So Forsberg’s return to the NHL is then left to the Rangers or the Flyers. Both are big market East Coast teams and both have a shot at the playoffs, although the Flyers have the better shot. But does Forsberg see the right mix on the Rangers. They have great veteran leadership of players who have won Stanley Cups. Scott Gomez, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Drury, and Jaromir Jagr. But he has played for the Flyers so he knows what he is getting himself into. Who will the Peter Forsberg returns to the NHL sweepstakes?

I don’t think that the Wings are out because they are former rivals. Maybe for other reasons but that seems a bit far fetched.

I disagree … rivalries continue on even if you are no longer playing for the team where the rivalry began. I believe that he would feel he was being a traitor towards the Avs if he was picked up with Wings. He already has 2 cups, so I don’t think he will sell his soul for another one. I think he would rather play for a team he respects. So I don’t think there is any chance he will sign with them solely on this basis.

That being said, didn’t he play for the Flyers? Why would he play for a rival like the Rangers?

Because he only played for the Flyers for 2 years. I think its hard to passionately hate a team in that short amount of time. Plus, while Forsberg was with the Flyers there were no playoff series between the two, which would further the hatred. Whereas, Forsberg played for the Avs/Nordiques for 10 years. That is a lot of time to build up a true hate for a team, especially with the Lemieux/Draper situation.
