NHL Might Remove Rangers Owners from the NHL after Anti-Trust Lawsuit
Madison Square Garden, L.P. owns every team that plays in the Madison Square Garden and they are being threatened that will be kicked out by the NHL over their lawsuit they filed against the NHL in regards to an anti-trust issue. The NHL currently controls all 30 NHL team’s promotions through NHL.com. The Rangers are upset that they don’t have the option to run their own promotions for the team and that they must in turn share revenue with the NHL. The Rangers management sued the NHL back in September on the anti trust issue and lost, with the judge saying it was perfectly reasonable for the league to take over team promotions. The NHL is now asking a judge to agree that the Ranger’s owners breached their contract with the NHL by challenging league rules.
Gary Bettman is asking for suspension and possibly removal of the Ranger’s owners over the issue. I personally side with the NHL in this matter. They should have promotional rights for all 30 teams as it puts them on even ground with one another and takes pressure of individual teams to handle sales when they may not be able to properly. The Rangers management are acting like the greedy, unruly child. I don’t think the management should be removed though, because in a worse case scenario the MSG management group could ban the Rangers from playing in Madison Square Garden, opening up a whole new can of worms.
