According to tsn.ca, Mats Sundin has signed a contract with the Vancouver Canucks.  The deal is worth $20 million over 2 years, which is the same deal the Canucks offered Sundin over the summer.  So, now that Sundin has signed with the Canucks, he will be officially playing in his 18th season in the NHL.  Mats Sundin had this to say:

“I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks,” said Sundin in a team statement. “Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit. I want to thank Mike Gillis and the entire Canucks organization for their professionalism throughout this entire process.”

Sundin’s contract with the Canucks begins immediately, although it is not known when he will take the ice.  Regardless, the Canucks needed scoring and they get it big time with Sundin.  Another reason Sundin decided to join the Canucks was because of fellow Swedes already on the team, with the Sedin twins and Ohlund.

Vanouver General Manager, Dave Nonis Fired

Posted on April 14th, 2008 in Vancouver Canucks by Wicked

Dave Nonis was fired as the General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks today. Nonis was the Canucks GM for 3 years, and failed to make the playoffs in 2 of the 3 years.

The one big move that Dave Nonis will be remembered for is the trade that sent Bertuzzi to Florida and brought Roberto Luongo to Vancouver. There is no known replacement at this time for the Canucks’ General Manager position.  Canucks chairman Aquillini said this in a press conference discussing the firing of GM Dave Nonis:

“We want to thank Dave for the many contributions he has made helping to build our organization during his tenure. However, I think this important change in leadership is critical to the future of the team and the direction we need to take. It’s not acceptable to our fans or to us as owners that our team isn’t in the playoffs.”
